Kuwasi at 60 by Kazembe Balagun

Kuwasi at 60

by Kazembe Balagun

On December 16, 2006 over 75 people gathered at LAVA in West Philadelphia. The crowd was a mix of Black liberation movement veterans (young and old), anarchist punks and white queer activists from ACT UP. They came together to pay homage to the late Kuwasi Balagoon, who would have turned 60 years old this year. Balagoon is not an immediately recognizable name in the pantheon of revolutionaries, yet he has developed into an underground hero 20 years after his death. This is due in large part to the maze of contradictions that constructed Balagoon’s life.

NYMAA mention in recent issue of The New Yorker magazine

exerpted from: The New Yorker HOLY ROLLERS by BEN MCGRATH (article about the monthly anarchistic Critical Mass bicyle ride) Issue of 2006-11-13

A mustachioed police inspector named John Codiglia walked toward us. “Do you know if Jack Black is riding in this event?” he asked. “You see the gentleman with the gold mask over there?” He pointed to a short guy wearing a red-and-black cape, right out of “Nacho Libre.” “That’s Jack Black! I know it’s him.”

V For Vendetta? A For Anarchy!

[Ed. Note: A for Anarchy was a working group that came out of the very first NYMAA General Assembly]

By Smile Inducer

Anarchists of all stripes (including irate comic book freaks) have united in action against the Hollywood distortion of the V For Vendetta graphic novel. Created by Alan Moore, V For Vendetta is a story in which a masked insurrectionary anarchist, "V", revolts against a fascist government and inspires an anarchist revolution. After being put through a film filter, the V character appears to be a quasi-George Washington promoting representative “democracy.” Angered by the watered-down version of what could have been an amazing movie, a group of us gathered and formed the A for Anarchy collective in New York City.
