Kuwasi at 60
by Kazembe Balagun
On December 16, 2006 over 75 people gathered at LAVA in West Philadelphia. The crowd was a mix of Black liberation movement veterans (young and old), anarchist punks and white queer activists from ACT UP. They came together to pay homage to the late Kuwasi Balagoon, who would have turned 60 years old this year. Balagoon is not an immediately recognizable name in the pantheon of revolutionaries, yet he has developed into an underground hero 20 years after his death. This is due in large part to the maze of contradictions that constructed Balagoon’s life.

New NYS Governor Eliot Spitzer is about to sign our land into 'trust' to build a casino. It is illegal. We would appreciate as many of our native brothers and sisters and our friends and allies registering our opposition on his site before he signs it into "law" on Jan. 1, 2007. Thank you.

Before you became Governor of New York State, you were the Attorney General of New York State. At that time you fought against fraud, crime and corruption at all levels. We are now asking you to abide by the laws of the land.

A mustachioed police inspector named John Codiglia walked toward us. “Do you know if Jack Black is riding in this event?” he asked. “You see the gentleman with the gold mask over there?” He pointed to a short guy wearing a red-and-black cape, right out of “Nacho Libre.” “That’s Jack Black! I know it’s him.”

[Sad news for Andy S and the other SHAC defendants]
FROM THE SHAC 7 SUPPORT COMMITTEE:
The SHAC7 Conviction:
A Blow to Free Speech and Compassionate Activism
On March 2, the Bush administration dealt yet another blow to the First Amendment, as the SHAC 7 were found guilty of multiple federal felonies for advocating the closure of the notorious animal-testing lab Huntingdon Life Sciences. Now, all six activists face years in federal prison. All six of the defendants are currently under house arrest while awaiting sentencing on June 13th.

[Ed. Note: A for Anarchy was a working group that came out of the very first NYMAA General Assembly]
By Smile Inducer
Anarchists of all stripes (including irate comic book freaks) have united in action against the Hollywood distortion of the V For Vendetta graphic novel. Created by Alan Moore, V For Vendetta is a story in which a masked insurrectionary anarchist, "V", revolts against a fascist government and inspires an anarchist revolution. After being put through a film filter, the V character appears to be a quasi-George Washington promoting representative “democracy.” Angered by the watered-down version of what could have been an amazing movie, a group of us gathered and formed the A for Anarchy collective in New York City.

Israel: What are they fighting for?

by Tanya Reinhart
It was Israel's offensive on Gaza that sparked off the new war in Lebanon. Since it withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah has carefully avoided any clashes with the Israeli army on Israeli territory (limiting themselves to the area of Shaba in Lebanon, which continues to be occupied by the Jewish State). The moment chosen by the shia-ite fighters for their first attack, and the rhetoric that followed, indicates that their intention was to reduce pressure on the Palestinians by opening up a new front. Their action can therefore be seen as the first military act of solidarity with the Palestinians from the Arab world. Whatever one might think of what Hezbollah has done, it is important to understand the nature of Israel's war against the Palestinians in Gaza.

The Summer Really Really Free Market was a raging success! Over the course of the day we had around four hundred people stop by St. Mark's Church (some even had to wait to get in!), to enjoy a small taste of what a non-capitalist world may look like, and how we can take care of each other and our needs without resorting to centralized state bureaucracy or cutthroat capitalism.

This week brought another in the long line of disclosures of government spying on Americans in the name of “security.” This time it was the California Office of Homeland Security, revealed by the Los Angeles Times to have compiled information about peaceful antiwar protests. These events included several discussed in previous entries here, such as the Walnut Creek, California demonstration on the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion and a demonstration supporting MacGregor Eddy, arrested protesting the many activities at Vandenberg Air Force Base in support of U.S. aggressive war making.
