Movement for Justice in El Barrio "La Consulta del Barrio"

Submitted by moose on July 17, 2006 - 11:53am.

As part of The Other Campaign, Movement for Justice in El Barrio is a grassroots immigrant organization fighting against gentrification and for justice in New York City. We are an organization committed to being truly rooted in our community base of El Barrio. For many years, the zapatistas have consulted their own community base for organizational decisions and direction. Movement for Justice in El Barrio also believes it is of utmost importance to integrate community led democratic principles within our own organizing efforts.

This summer, Movement for Justice in El Barrio has initiated a comprehensive community consultation process called "La Consulta del Barrio". We are consulting our community for direction and to decide which other community problem, besides gentrification, we will soon be organizing around.

The Consulta del Barrio consists of a series of town hall meetings, a community-wide vote, community dialogues, street outreach, door-knocking and house meetings. Our first town hall meeting will be held next weekend.

After the Consulta del Barrio ends, we will identify and make public the new issue we will tackle and launch a new fight for justice rooted and led by our immigrant community.

We hope you will support The Other Campaign in NYC by supporting our struggle.

Muchas gracias.
