SUPPORTING DANIEL McGOWAN HAS NEVER BEEN SO EASY!
-------------------------------
Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice
activist from New York City. In December 2005, he was
arrested and threatened with life in prison for his
role in two acts of property destruction against two
Pacific Northwest corporations (one cutting down old
growth forests and the other planting genetically
modified trees on state property). Daniel and 3 others
refused to cooperate and accepted a plea bargain in
which they implicated no one else. On June 4, 2007,
Daniel was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison on
charges of arson and conspiracy. He began serving his
time on July 2nd at the Metropolitan Detention Center
in Brooklyn.
Daniel grew up in Rockaway Beach, Queens, and is a
much-loved member of the community. He has worked
on many projects including the demonstrations against
the Republican National Convention in 2004,
counter-military recruitment efforts, organizing "free
markets" in his neighborhood, and supporting political
prisoners such as Jeff "Free" Luers. At the time of
arrest, Daniel was earning a Master's degree in
acupuncture and was working at WomensLaw.org, a
nonprofit that helps survivors of domestic violence
navigate the legal system.
Daniel McGowan's arrest came in the context of a
well-coordinated, multi-state sweep by the Federal
government of over 15 activists involved in
environmental defense work. Many have dubbed this
round up a 'Green Scare' because those arrested
have been labeled 'terrorists' and threatened with
life in prison despite the fact no one was injured by
any of their actions. In court, this label was transformed
into a legal status when 7 of the 10 defendants were
given a "terrorist enhancement", permanently branding
them as 'terrorists' even though they never have and
never would injure anyone.
Although Daniel's court proceedings are over, he needs
your support now more than ever. Daniel wants to make
the most of his time in prison and has enrolled in a
Master's program in Sociology that he can complete
while imprisoned. Check out http://www.supportdaniel.org for
information on how you can make donations to go
towards his educations, as well as contribute to his
commissary account in prison. Some other ways
you can help Daniel are by writing him a letter,
organizing events or even just handing out flyers to
get the word out about his case.
