This year is the 80th anniversary of the judicial murder of Italian
anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, one of the most
notorious miscarriages of justice in the history of the US. NYC’s
Libertarian Book Club is organizing a Sacco & Vanzetti Memorial for
Thur., Aug. 23 in Union Square. Thus far: We have a permit for the
memorial, and have booked St. Joseph’s Church on Sixth Avenue for a
teach-in the prior evening. The two events will include:
* Talk: Sacco & Vanzetti, the Red Scare, and today’s “War on Terror”
* Talk: Sacco & Vanzetti and the continuing fight for immigrants’ rights
* A performance by the Living Theater
* A performance of the opera “Sacco & Vanzetti” by Marc Blitzstein and
Leonard Lehrman
* More music and performance
Anyone interested in contributing their time and talents to the memorial
is invited to attend. The memorial will be preceded by a teach-in at St
Joseph's Church (6th Ave at West 4th Street), and include talks,
performance, music, etc.
THIS AIN'T JUST HISTORY! Immigrants, anarchists, and others on the
"terrorist" hit list are being targeted today by the institutional heirs
of the J Edgar Hoover-era FBI and all the others who fomented the Red
Scare that led to the deaths of Sacco and Vanzetti. Their deaths marked
the beginning of an era of state terror in America that's still going
strong.
